Start:Aug 04, 2020

Duration:5 Minute(s)

Goal: this Cognitive Trail will increase the ability to apply Cal/OSHA safety standards for the construction industry.

Description: This Navitent will increase the successfulness of applying OSHA's safety standards. This information was taken from Cal/OSHA Pocket Guide f ... Read More

Summary: Safety Made Simple

Step 1

The next Steps cover Cal/OSHA safety regulations for Aerial Devices and Elevating Work Platform Equipment. Where appropriate, we have referenced the code from Title 8 of the California Code of Regulations.

The topics we will cover are:

-General Safety Requirements
-Elevating Work Platform Equipment
-Information That Must Be Displayed
-Design Standards

After each of the next 4 Steps, select the 'successful' response to indicate that you have read and understand the Step.

Select 'successful' now and proceed.

Step 2

General Safety Requirements

Aerial devices, such as cherry pickers and boom trucks, may be vehicle-mounted or self-propelled and used to position employees.

General safety requirements are as follows:

-Only authorized persons may operate aerial devices.

-Aerial devices must not rest on any structure.

-Controls must be tested before use.

-Workers must stand only on the floor of the basket. No planks, ladders, or other means are allowed to gain greater heights.

-A fall protection system must be worn and attached to the boom or basket.

-Brakes must be set when employees are elevated.

-An aerial lift truck must not be moved when an employee is on the elevated boom platform except under conditions (3648(l)) listed in the California Code of Regulations.

Step 3

Elevating Work Platform Equipment

Elevating work platform equipment, such as vertical tower, scissor lift, and mast-climbing work platform may be used to position employees and materials.

General safety requirements are as follows:

-The platform deck shall be equipped with a guardrail or other structure around its upper periphery. Where the guardrail is less than 39 inches high, a personal fall protection system is required

-The platform shall have toeboards at sides and ends

-No employee shall ride, nor tools, materials, or equipment be allowed on a traveling elevated platform

-Units shall not be loaded in excess of the design working load

Step 4

Information That Must Be Displayed

The following information must be displayed on the device:

-Manufacturer’s name, model, and serial number

-Rated capacity at the maximum platform height and maximum platform travel height

-Operating instructions

-Cautions and restrictions

Step 5

Design Standards

Devices must be designed to applicable American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standards.

Note: See clearances for operations near high-voltage conductors in the isoBlog titled 'Electrical' located in the 'unscheduled' tab above.
